Ysterplaat Air Show

Yesterday I drove through to Cape Town’s “Ysterplaat” Air Force Base to see the air show.

Pictured top-middle is South Africa’s legendary Rooivalk attack helicopter.

Bottom left is a 1942 DC-3. This is the last one still in operation anywhere on earth! Apparently it was originally used by the US Navy, then the CIA. I’m not quite sure how it ended up here in South Africa..

Tragically one of the pilots died on Saturday when his jet crashed into Table Bay. His team flew over in the “man missing in action” formation which was really sad and moving.

I was there on Friday, with Louis Lenhoff. Louis’ wife Monique works for RRS and they had a stand there and she organised us the entrance tickets as Thursday and Friday was not open to the public. The accident actually took place on Friday an hour after we left – we saw them perform. I also took some pictures there – but I cannot post them here?

You Johan. You could probably post pictures here in the comments if you enter the image html tags yourself.. It’s a pity WordPress doesn’t allow wysiwyg html editing when posting comments..

    Hi Tony,

It’s this coming weekend. I have no idea what the cost is etc.. I’m sure you’ll be able to find it if you google the event though.

    Cheers,

    Gary.

Well Mr Nell, you are obviously far from being an animal lover. It is only those of us that care for our animals that have made noises. What about the other 90% of the population in CT (probably including you) who do not stay with their dogs or calm them through that unnessary noise. Have you any idea how many dogs live a life outside and/or chained up who went as beserk as mine did.

    Hi Sue,

I would possibly suggest that if you choose to live next to an airfield you probably need to anticipate some noise. If you’re that concerned about the noise, you could always move, not?

I think the advantages of the nation demonstrating its airforce capabilities once every two years far outweighs a few upset dogs. But we’re all entitled to our own opinions, and to choose where we live..
